At stop 18, Sam gets off and starts towards his apartment. Sam passes the two-person apartments, he will move there in just three years. At thirty he will be evaluated with a compatibility cyber-test and paired in a two-person apartment with a Path B woman. But for the next five years, he remains in his single apartment.
Once home, Sam unpacks the pork provision and places it in the oven. The computer on the desk lights up with the six-o-clock state of the nation update. The conflict update is the same as the last night, only with the date changed. “The war is progressing in favor of the Soviet Union. The cybernet has identified our greatest threats and has devised the ideal plan for victory. Your contributions in the factories are vital for our success. The next draft round is in four months and twenty-seven days.” The oven timer sounds and Sam retrieves the pork. The computer monitor goes black again.
At 8:00 the shower water begins to run and continues for ten minutes before cutting off, so as to not waste any water. The laundry machine automatically starts at 8:45 and the dryer starts at 9:30. At 10:00, Sam scans his finger on the computer monitor, the doors lock, and the lights shut off. Sam falls asleep knowing that like the past one hundred years, the next day will be the same. The computer will turn on at 7:00, the Soviet Union is prosperous, all are equal in the cyber nation.
